Distance Badge and Water Skills Award Scheme

The NASCH Award Scheme is built up of two parts: Water Skills & Stroke Development and Distance Badge & Timing Awards, it is extremely flexible to accommodate all disabilities and is currently offered free of charge to all members with a disability. We have a small team of volunteers who assess members atleast four times a year. Any badges and certificates awarded are presented at the end of the session. Between assessments, SDSG volunteers are on hand to encourage, advise, support and lead in group activities, however, it is expected other families members and carers will work with the member on a one to one basis to practice and develop swimming skills.  SDSG does not provide one to one support, personal care or physical support in the water. However, when available we do offer volunteer swimming companions.

Distance Badges

Awards are given for the distance a member is able to swim, eg, how many lengths or widths.

Timing Awards

Members are timed how fast they can swim a length or width, wiith or without support.

Stroke Development

Although strokes are learnt through Water Skills, these can be improved and developed. Awards are granted on a points basis depending on the type of stroke.

Water Skills

To get an award/badge a member must have enough points.  Points are awarded for learning and becoming proficient in different skills and for increasing independence. Skills are graded according to the amount of support required.
