Not only is it a whole-body workout, but thanks to the extra resistance of water, you’re building strength and boosting your cardio fitness at the same time. The buoyancy offered by the water means you’re less likely to hurt yourself and makes it ideal if you’re recovering from injury or returning to exercise after a long lay-off. These sessions are also a great opportunity to meet up with friends, socialise and get active together. Not only does this make them great for your physical wellbeing, but your mental health as well. Join Us View Swim Dates Volunteering We are currently offering Aquatic Helper Placements for young people aged 16+ to gain experience and skills working with people with SEND. The Awards are divided into 7 progressive stages. They make up the core, national syllabus of learning to swim for primary school aged children. They are designed to reward your child for their development of the essential aquatic skills they need to be confident, competent and safe in the water. Should a child not meet the Learn to Swim Award criteria within the series of classes, we will endeavour to match their progression to another award scheme. To access these classes you must be a member of SDSG and be regularly attending our main fortnightly swim session. More Information I.DEVELOP Adult Swimming From time to time we offer the opportunity for young people and adults with SEND to work towards The Swim England Adult Swimming Framework through a series of adapted lessons . The Adult Swimming Framework is about improving confidence, technique and safety in the water, with no age limit. Not everyone is able to reach their potential in the water during their school years . This is where swimming lessons using our Adult Swimming Framework can help. Around 30% of adults in the UK can’t swim a length. Yet, one quarter of adult non-swimmers would like to learn how. Adults have very different needs to children when learning to swim – as an adult, you have different motivations and learn in different ways. Our Adult Swimming Framework takes this into account, providing goals and targets suitable for those aged 16+. To access these classes you must be a member of SDSG and be regularly attending our main fortnightly swim session. • ABOUT | Health | Scarborough Disabled Swimming Group | England

This page explains what the charity is about and how to sign up. Welcome to Accessible Swimming We are a user led membership charity offering swimming opportunities for people with a disability of any age, people aged 50 and over and also their family who live in Scarborough, Whitby, Filey or the surrounding district. A Message From Our Chairman: Thank you for taking the time to learn more about Scarborough Disabled Swimming Group. As a long‑standing, user‑led charity, SDSG has always been shaped by the people who swim with us, volunteer with us, and support our mission. It’s a privilege to serve as Chair and to help guide a group with such a strong sense of community, inclusion, and mutual support. Our purpose is simple: to make swimming accessible, enjoyable, and confidence‑building for disabled people of all ages and abilities. Every fortnight, I see the difference that a welcoming environment, dedicated volunteers, and adapted opportunities can make — whether it’s someone gaining independence in the water, a family finding a supportive space, or a swimmer discovering a new sense of achievement. We are proud of our history, but we are equally committed to the future. As we continue to grow, we remain focused on removing barriers, strengthening our volunteer team, and ensuring that everyone who joins us feels valued, supported, and encouraged. If you’re thinking about getting involved — as a swimmer, family member, volunteer, or partner — I hope you’ll feel the warmth and purpose that define SDSG. You are very welcome here. Richard Chair of Trustees Objective: “To provide or assist in the provision of facilities and events for recreation, rehabilitation, sport and leisure time occupation, (in particular but not exclusively by the provision of facilities and opportunities for swimming,) for people with disabilities* and their families, in the interest of social welfare with the object of improving their condition” Partnerships: We work with many local businesses, groups and charities to improve and develop accessibility and health improvement provision for people with a disability in the Borough of Scarborough. Similarly, we receive new member referrals from Social Services (Disabled Children Service and Adult Services), Occupational Health, our local Home Improvement Agency (White Rose), NHS Specialist Nurses, GP Practices, NYC Wellbeing Service and our local Youth Services to mention a few. It is amazing what can be achieved through working together! Please contact us to find out more. As a user‑led charity, we welcome anyone with a disability of any age, as well as anyone aged 50 and over, to join our sessions at Scarborough Sports Village. Family members are also encouraged to attend and take part. We operate a flat rate entry fee for our swim sessions and do not charge extra for partaking in Aqua-fit, NASCH Distance Badge or Water-Skills Award Scheme etc, to ensure people are not put off partaking in these activities. Subject to funding, we also offer extension activities during the week, from time to time. Our volunteers and staff are trained in various techniques of aquatic development, as well as expertise in working with members with anxiety, physical, sensory, communication or behaviour challenges. We also have specialist equipment and toys to make your time with us extra special. In partnership with parents and caregivers, we provide adaptive swimming activities that focus on techniques tailored to each individual’s abilities, needs, and goals—regardless of age, disability, or medical condition. Alongside, a range of non-aquatic extension activities to enrich the programme and to help build confidence, engagement and fitness levels. The activities will be user led, linking in with the wider community and mainstream activities, with key opportunities for volunteer development . The rolling programme of activities will be accessible for a wide range of children, young people and adults with SEND and also adults aged 50+. We’re so grateful for the funding from the National Lottery Community Fund, another organisation working with us to increase swimming opportunities for those with SEND or aged 50+ in the Borough of Scarborough. Learn about the benefits of swimming, the value that it brings and where to find out more information about swimming in general Why Swimming Learn about the benefits of swimming, the value that it brings and where to find out more information about swimming in general from Swim England Benefits of swimming whatever your fitness level No matter what your fitness level, the general benefits of swimming are yours to go out and grab and make your own. It has the power to give your muscles a makeover, transform you into a cardio king, turn back the clock, and calm you quicker than a secluded beach in the Bahamas. But if this isn’t enough to get you reaching for your cossie, here are our top benefits of swimming to show you there is no such thing as being too cool for the pool. Top Eight: Full body workout. Swimming uses all the muscles in the body so whether you swim a gentle breaststroke or hammer butterfly , you will get a full body workout. Plus, exercising in water makes your body work harder so 30 minutes in a pool is worth 45 minutes of the same activity on land. Great for general wellbeing. Just 30 minutes of swimming three times a week alongside a balanced, healthy diet and lifestyle is one of the best ways to stay fit and healthy and maintain a positive mental outlook . Do it with friends, and it’s even more fun! De-stresses and relaxes. Whether it’s work stressing you out, the kids being a nightmare, or just life in general, we all get times we just want to SCREAM. Well, help is at hand. Swimming regularly can lower stress levels, reduce anxiety and depression, and improve your sleep patterns. Feeling the mental benefits of swimming takes just a light swim. No lane pounding needed. Burns those calories. Swimming is one of the most effective ways to burn calories . A gentle swim can burn over 200 calories in just half an hour, more than double that of walking. And a faster swim would see that chocolate bar gone quicker than if you went running or cycling. Lowers the risk of diseases . As well as being a great form of cardiovascular exercise, swimming just 30 minutes a week can help to guard against heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. S upports the body. Water supports up to 90 per cent of the body’s weight. So if you sprained an ankle at Monday night football or have a long term injury or illness, swimming is a brilliant way to stay active. Increases your energy levels. Inactivity and not ageing is often responsible for people’s lack of energy. Just 30 minutes of swimming three times per week can boost your energy levels through increased metabolic rate. Exercising without the sweat . If sweating puts you off other forms of exercise, fear not! As a swimmer, you’ll never feel sweaty no matter how hard you work because the water around you is constantly cooling you down.
